4 family photo shoot prizes each worth £250 to be won
27th April 2011
Richard's BIG 4 - Sponsor me to run 4 marathons and you could win one of 4 family photo shoots
I am running 4 marathons to celebrate my nephew Cameron’s 4th birthday and raise much needed funds for Down's Syndrome Oxford. And by sponsoring me you stand to win one of four photo-shoot prizes on offer.
Originally starting on 24th April 2009 everything was suddenly put on hold The DAY BEFORE the London Marathon and I had to cancel all my races. I started again in Florence but was injured for the whole of 2010.
1. Florence ( Italy ) 29th November 2009 – Completed
Now I am currently injury free and back on track
2. Utrecht ( Holland ) 25th April 2011 – Completed
3. Abingdon ( Oxford ) 16th October 2011
4. TBC 2011
Cameron, Down's Syndrome and winning a photo shoot
On 8th April 2005 the phone rang with the joyous message:
‘It’s a baby boy’... and so I became an uncle.
Two days later, however, there was another phonecall:
‘Richard... we have something to tell you... our little boy has Down’s Syndrome’
A first baby is a wonderful life changing experience and every parent becomes aware of their child’s developmental milestones – with a baby who has Down’s Syndrome you become a developmental expert for every step of the journey.
Heart Condition
1 in 3 babies with Down’s Syndrome have a heart condition, so the first month is full of harrowing tests – luckily my nephew, Cameron didn’t have to undergo any heart surgery.
Feeding
Feeding a baby with Down’s Syndrome is difficult and time consuming – due to lax muscle tone their weight drops dramatically and sometimes they have to be tube fed – a 20 minute feed would take Cameron 2 to 3 hours.
Walking
Learning to walk takes longer – Cameron was pretty quick at 2 1/2 years.
Talking
Talking is another hurdle – due to brain connection problems learning sign language is necessary - Cameron now ‘signs’ and partially speaks (lax muscle tone makes what is said also very hard to understand).
Other Problems
In addition there are endless check ups as children with Down’s Syndrome are more prone to hearing, sight, thyroid, heart, chest, digestion and sinus problems.
Cameron today

With tremendous love and attention from his mum and dad Cameron today is a joyful, silly, bright and loving little boy with a great sense of humour. In September 2009 he started mainstream school – another BIG milestone.
Running for Cameron
To Celebrate Cameron’s 4th Birthday and raise awareness and vital funds for the Down's Syndrome Oxford charity I am running 4 marathons.

We'll take photos for up to 2 hours and later you choose the prints you would like up to the value of £100.
Raising vital funds for Down's Syndrome Oxford
Down's Syndrome Oxford is run and funded by parents and supporters to provide information, help and activities for children and young adults with Down's Syndrome and their families. Membership is free and some of the benefits include friendship, family social events and practical assistance with educational and developmental issues. They are not professional fundraisers, just a group of ordinary parents and volunteers who employ no staff, so every penny goes directly to support the families.
